How to Make Matcha and Matcha Lattes

How to Make Matcha

Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular tea where you steep and toss the leaves, with matcha you’re drinking the whole leaf – so it’s richer in flavour (and goodness).

It’s got a long history in Japanese tea ceremonies, but these days you’ll find it in everything from lattes to cakes. Smooth, earthy, and vibrant green – it’s a little daily ritual that feels good to drink.

Try Matcha on Its Own

You’ll need:

  • ½ tsp matcha powder (about 1g)

  • 60ml hot water (around 80°C)

  • A sieve and a matcha whisk

What to do:

  1. Sift the matcha into a bowl – no one likes clumps. This is an important step.

  2. Let your water cool – boiling water makes it bitter. Tip: decant between cups to cool it down

  3. Add the water and whisk in a quick “M” motion until frothy

  4. Pour into a mug and enjoy

Smooth, earthy, and simple.

Make a Matcha Latte

You’ll need:

  • ½–1 tsp matcha powder (depending how strong you like it)

  • A sieve and a matcha whisk

  • 240ml milk (any kind)

Optional:

  • Milk frother (or a small saucepan and whisk)

What to do:

  1. Sift your matcha into a small bowl

  2. Add a splash of hot water (about 60ml at 80°C) and whisk until smooth and frothy

  3. Heat your milk until warm (not boiling). Froth it if you like it creamy

  4. Pour the matcha into your mug, then slowly pour in the milk

That’s it – creamy, comforting, and still packed with that smooth, grassy flavour.

Iced Matcha Latte

Same idea, just cold:

  • Whisk your matcha with a splash of cold water

  • Add cold milk

  • Throw in a few ice cubes

Refreshing and easy.
